Best-selling novelist, Jennifer Egan, says it best: "Reading is the nourishment that feeds the kind of writing you want to do"

Are you a writer or want to be a writer? My first advice to every writer who wants to start anything- a blog, a novel, a book of short stories- is READ READ READ. It's through reading the masters that we learn what good writing sounds like and the tips and tricks to getting there ourselves- how to write blazingly realistic dialogue, how to shape characters that readers fall head-over-heels in love with, how to deal with bumpy plots and smooth resolutions.

In the 'Read Like A Writer' Course, we'll focus on reading acclaimed contemporary Canadian authors who encourage us to understand the current history of literature we are joining, teach us what fantastic writing sounds like, and inspire us to learn from their distinct voices.

Each month, we will meet together to discuss the current book on the list- what we loved, hated, and were inspired by- followed by a lesson on what we can learn from the writer's style. What makes Miriam Toews' dialogue so hilarious and realistic? Why can we picture Alice Munro's small town characters so clearly? How do we move our plots around in time so seamlessly like Wayson Choi? Through reading the masters, we'll learn to steal their tricks, be inspired by their writing styles, and grow into better writers by becoming discerning readers.
